How Does Equine-Assisted Therapy Work?

Equine-assisted therapy sessions involve a client working toward their therapeutic goals through interactions with both a horse and a therapist. It involves activities (such as grooming, feeding, haltering, and leading a horse) that are supervised by one of our equine-trained psychologists.


Over time, clients are supported in developing a relationship with one or several horses, and it is through guided exploration of this relationship that the therapeutic work occurs. This therapy modality is suitable for those struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and more.

What Are The Benefits Of Equine-Assisted Therapy?

Some clients find that they are able to face their issues faster and with more motivation through equine-assisted therapy than in a traditional office-based therapy setting. The majority of this therapeutic work involves being with the horse on the ground. However, if the client is interested and it seems like it may be beneficial to therapeutic progress, he or she may sit on or ride the horse once a relationship has been formed.
