What is Trauma?

Trauma can be defined as experiencing extreme stress which overcomes our capacity to manage a negative event(s). Experiencing a traumatic event can lead to feelings of helplessness and feeling like we cannot cope. Trauma can result from a single event or repeated trauma incidents such as accidents, natural disasters, criminal violence, physical/emotional/sexual abuse, domestic violence, and prolonged stress.
