Favourite Quote:

“I wonder if you can ever be at home anywhere, because home is not a place - it's a state of mind. Really, being at home is feeling at home in your own skin... Perhaps you have been searching for home in the wrong place all your life.”
― Irvin D. Yalom

I chose this quote from Irvin Yalom because the concept of feeling at home in one’s own body is significant to me. Life may take us to places we never expected; circumstances can change in a moment. Feeling content and safe within our bodies means that no matter what challenges come in life, there is one place that will always feel comforting.

My name is Sarah, and I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University, with the objective of obtaining licensure as a Registered Psychologist. I am entering the psychology field after over a decade of working in healthcare as a Registered Nurse. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Alberta.

My nursing experience spans from inpatient/outpatient psychiatry, emergency medicine, home care, and end-of-life care. Through my practicum at Balance Psychological Services, I will be supervised by Samatha Gruber and Samantha Dover.

My interest in creating genuine connections with other people is what has led me to pursuing higher education and a career in psychology. My therapeutic approach centres on authenticity, mutual respect, and trust, in which I aim to create a space where you feel heard, validated and empowered to move forward. I work in a collaborative, non-judgemental manner that is grounded in curiosity.

I aim to specialize in providing care to other healthcare providers and first responders. I know first-hand how demanding healthcare careers can be. With this mutual understanding, I aim to create a space to slow down and debrief those never-ending shifts or hard calls. I have a deep interest in exploring meaning, especially in the context of individuals and professionals impacted by traumatic events. That being said, my skill and knowledge base as a Registered Nurse can be applied to a variety of populations who are not in these professions. Please reach out if you think I could be a good fit for you!

I care deeply about social justice and am continually learning from those from diverse orientations and cultural backgrounds. I wish to journey alongside those who have been marginalized or who have felt “othered, ” because your story matters to me.

I respectfully acknowledge that I live and work on Amiskwaciwâskahikan/ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ: land that is the traditional home for many Indigenous peoples, the ancestral home of the Papaschase Cree, Treaty 6 Territory, and Métis Region 4 Territory.
