Summer often feels like a much-needed break for teens after the pressures of school, but the

change in routine can also bring its own set of challenges for their mental health. With more free time and less structure, some teens may struggle with loneliness, anxiety, or low motivation. As parents, there are a few simple ways you can support your teen's well-being over the summer months.

Supporting Your Teen's Mental Health: Provide Structure

First, keep some structure in place. While it’s important for teens to relax, having a loose

routine - such as regular sleep schedules, meals, and planned activities - can help maintain a

sense of stability. Too much unstructured time can sometimes lead to increased anxiety, poor sleep, or low mood.

Supporting Your Teen's Mental Health: Check-In

Stay connected and check in regularly. Use the extra time summer provides to have open, casual conversations. Ask how they’re feeling, what’s on their mind, or what they’re looking forward to. Often, teens open up more when conversations feel natural and non-pressured, like while driving or during shared activities.

Supporting Your Teen's Mental Health: Get Active

Encourage physical activity and social connection. Whether it’s a part-time job, volunteering,

summer camps, or simply spending time with friends, staying socially engaged and active can boost mood and confidence.

Supporting Your Teen's Mental Health: Pay Attention

Finally, watch for changes that may signal your teen's mental health is struggling - withdrawal from friends, changes in sleep or appetite, irritability, or loss of interest in activities they usually enjoy. If concerns arise, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional support.

Summer can be a great opportunity to strengthen your relationship and support your teen’s

mental health. With a little intention, you can help set them up for a positive and balanced

season.
